It started at 06:19 in the morning, Indian Standard Time, and the first person to notice was a woman in Frankfurt who was awake because her baby was awake.
She worked in a clearing bank's overnight settlement team from a spare bedroom and she was watching a screen that was supposed to show her a queue of pending transfers. At 01:49 Frankfurt time the queue stopped being pending and became a list of everything: every account number, every counterparty, every reference field, from every institution on the network, in the clear.
She looked at it for four seconds. Then she picked up the phone.
It lasted nine minutes and fifteen seconds.
Ananya slept through the beginning of it, which she has always been grateful for, and woke at 06:31 to three missed calls and a phone that was making a noise she had never heard it make. That turned out to be eight banking apps and a government messaging service all issuing critical alerts at the same time.
She got downstairs at 06:34 and her father had the television on with the sound off and the laptop open, and she stood in the doorway and watched the ticker.

"It stopped," Krishna said. "Whatever it was. It stopped at nine minutes past."
"Nanna, what happened?"
"I don't know what happened. I know what it looked like." He turned the laptop toward her. He had, at some point in the previous eleven minutes, opened eight browser windows and started saving pages, because he was a man who had been keeping a log on the backs of homework since March. "There is a bank in Frankfurt whose settlement queue printed itself. And an insurance company in Toronto whose entire policy database was served to the public internet for nine minutes because the transport layer stopped being a transport layer. And this—" he clicked "—which is the Bombay Stock Exchange halting at six twenty-two and refusing to say why."
Ananya sat down.
"And that," her father said, and turned the screen slightly, "is a dashboard belonging to a scheduled commercial bank in Vijayawada, which I found because a man on Twitter found it, and it is the ledger. The actual ledger. Eight hundred thousand accounts with names and balances, and it is still up, Annu, it has been up for eleven minutes since the thing ended because nobody at that bank is awake."
By seven o'clock every government in the world was calling it an attack.
By eight the phrase unprecedented coordinated cyber operation had been used by two national security spokespeople on three continents, and by seven somebody in Washington had used the word Chinese and somebody in Beijing had used the word American. By ten there was a Cabinet Secretary on Indian television saying that the national quantum infrastructure had performed with resilience, which was a sentence with no content whatsoever and was, Ananya thought, probably the most honest thing anybody said all day.
At thirteen the Quantace all-hands went out. All CySec leave cancelled. All Quantum Research non-critical work suspended. War rooms on seventeen, thirty-six and forty-three.
She went in and she sat in a briefing on the forty-third floor, her brother's floor, in a room she had never been in, seven seats down from a man called Deepak who could not look at her. And listened to Raghav from Security Operations describe what had happened, and Raghav got it wrong in the way that everybody got it wrong.
"—so the working hypothesis is a coordinated exploitation of a previously unknown weakness in the RSA and elliptic-curve implementations that underpin—"
"It wasn't an attack."
The room turned. Priya Malhotra, Director of AI Research, had not looked up from her tablet.
"Ma'am?"
"There was no attack." Malhotra put the tablet down. "I have had four hundred people on this since a quarter past six and there is no attack anywhere in the data. Nothing arrived. Nothing was sent. There is no traffic, there is no injection, there is no exploit, there is no actor. At six nineteen, everything protected by an asymmetric primitive stopped being protected, everywhere, simultaneously, and at six twenty-eight it started again."
"Started again," Raghav said. "Ma'am, that isn't a thing that can happen. If somebody factored a two-thousand-bit modulus at six nineteen they still have the factors at six twenty-nine. You cannot un-know a prime."
"No," said Malhotra. "You cannot. And nobody has any factors. I have checked every certificate authority we have a relationship with and not one key on earth has been retired this morning, because not one key on earth has been broken." She let that sit. "Nothing was solved and then unsolved. For nine minutes and twenty seconds, factoring a two-thousand-bit modulus cost about as much as sorting a list. Then it went back to costing what it costs."
Nobody said anything.
"The mathematics did not change," Malhotra said. "The difficulty did."
"Then somebody has a machine," Raghav said.
"Somebody has a machine that works for nine minutes, everywhere at once, and then stops and gives it back." Malhotra's voice was flat with something Ananya could not immediately place and eventually identified as fear. "You do not break into every house on earth for nine minutes and then leave. That is not a burglary. That is weather."
And then Malhotra said the thing that made Ananya want to stand up and applaud, and it was the first time in seven months she had heard anybody in that building be right about something.
"And for the record, since it is in six of the briefing documents in front of me: nobody has proved that P equals NP. Factoring is not NP-complete. Neither is discrete log. They sit in a much smaller and much stranger room than that." She picked up her tablet again. "Which is not a comfort. It means the thing that happened this morning was not even the big one."
She's right, Ananya thought, sitting six seats down in her dead brother's building. She's completely right and she is right for the wrong reason.
Because Malhotra had the mathematics correct and the architecture backwards. She thought the smallness of factoring was reassuring. Ananya had spent nine hours at a dining table in June with a graph of four hundred and six nodes, and she knew that it did not matter in the slightest which problem had become cheap, because every edge in that graph ran upward. Layer one, layer two, the apex. You could not tell, from underneath, whether the thing that had gone soft at 06:19 was a footnote or a wall.
Something had verified a fragment. That was all. Not the proof, a fragment, one of the eighty in layer three or the hundred and forty in layer two, and while it was being verified the cost of asking that one question had fallen to nothing, all over the world, in every machine, at once. Then it went back up. And the world spent the rest of the day blaming China.
The optimisation events came all through October and November and the terrible thing about them was that they were good news.
Ananya kept the list in the ruled notebook, and by the end she had thirty-one entries, and she had stopped being able to read her own handwriting in the last three.
Sixteenth of October. A structural biology group in Heidelberg reports that a protein whose folded structure has been an open problem since 2009 resolved itself in a simulation that should have taken three months of compute and took four hours. Two weeks later, three groups in three countries report the same thing on different targets. By the eighth of November, sixteen of the standing hard problems in the field are simply solved, and there is a Nature editorial about the beginning of a golden age.
Then the biology.
Ananya read that paper four times and had to put it down twice. Because a protein's real folded shape is not the global energy minimum. It never has been. Everyone learns this in an undergraduate course and then forgets it: a real protein folds along a pathway, in a crowded cell, in about a millisecond, guided by chaperones, and it stops at a shape that is good enough and metastable and, crucially, reversible. It has to come apart again. That is what being alive is.
In three separate labs in October, cell cultures began producing proteins that had gone to the true minimum. Perfectly folded. Maximally stable. Thermodynamically ideal.
They did not come apart. Nothing in the cell could denature them, because nothing in the cell had ever needed to. And the cultures did not die dramatically — they stopped, mid-cycle, full of beautiful crystalline optimal molecules that would not release. The electron micrographs that came out of the Heidelberg group in November are, Ananya thinks, the single most frightening images produced by any human being in that year, and they were published in a supplementary appendix and nobody outside the field ever saw them.
Second of November. The India Meteorological Department's Pune model, running the monsoon withdrawal over the peninsula, achieves a forecast skill that breaks its own verification software: the ten-day rainfall prediction for ten districts of Telangana comes in correct to the minute of onset and to within six millimetres of accumulation.
It is announced as a triumph. There is a press conference. A very good scientist who has worked on that model for nineteen years cries on television, and Ananya, watching him, cried too, for a completely different reason.
Because the atmosphere is chaotic. That is not a limitation of the model, it is a property of the atmosphere, Lorenz, 1963, the whole of modern meteorology built on the acceptance that a fluid on a rotating sphere has a finite predictability horizon of about two weeks and that no computer of any size will ever exceed it. It is a theorem about the weather, not a fact about our machines.
A forecast correct to the minute four days out does not mean somebody has built a better model. It means the atmosphere over sixteen districts of Telangana had stopped being chaotic.
She sat in front of the television and watched a man weep with joy about it, and she wrote in the ruled notebook: the sky over Warangal has been solved.
Nineteenth of November. Whitefield, Bengaluru.
This is the one Ananya went to see, and she took an early flight and told nobody, and she has never fully described it to anybody except her mother.
It began as a story about logistics. An area of about five square kilometres in which: over four days, every routing system began returning globally optimal solutions. Delivery riders finished seventeen-hour shifts in six. The traffic signals had stopped needing to be signals. Three separate quick-commerce companies reported that their promised delivery windows had collapsed from ten minutes to three and then to ninety seconds and that they had no idea how, and one of them put out a press release taking credit.
Queues went first. Then queues stopped existing, because a queue is a mismatch between arrival and service and there was no longer any mismatch anywhere: you arrived at the counter at the moment the counter became free, every time, for four days, and after the first day nobody found this delightful any more.
By the third day the ordinary friction of the neighbourhood had gone. Nobody was waiting for anything. Nobody was looking for anything. The autos knew where you were going. There was food in front of you before you had decided you were hungry, and it was exactly what you wanted, and it cost the optimal amount.
Ananya walked through it on the fourth day, at five in the afternoon, on a wide clean road in Whitefield with three hundred flats on either side.
Nothing was happening.
Not stillness. Not evacuation. There were people. They were on their balconies and in the parks and in the cafés and they were fine, they were healthy, they were not distressed, and they were doing nothing at all, and when Ananya spoke to them they answered her, completely, helpfully, instantly, and correctly.
She asked a woman of about sixty on a bench what she was doing.
"Nothing," the woman said pleasantly.
"Are you waiting for someone?"
"No."
"Have you eaten?"
"Yes."
"What are you going to do this evening?"
And the woman thought about it, and Ananya watched her think about it, and watched something like puzzlement pass over her face and fail to arrive at anything, and the woman said:
"Nothing needs doing."
She was not ill. She was not sedated. Every one of her questions had been answered before she asked it, every problem in her day had solved itself. There was nothing left in a two-square-kilometre radius that required a human being to do anything, and so she was sitting on a bench in the sun, and she was content, and she was not going to get up again.
There were four thousand people like that in Whitefield on the nineteenth of November and it lifted at twelve the following morning and every one of them got up and went to work and about thirteen hundred of them said afterwards that they had had a strange few days and could not describe it.
Ananya flew back to Hyderabad that evening. She wrote one line in the notebook on the plane.
It doesn't kill. Nobody in Whitefield died. It just removes the reason for anybody to be there, and then people are still there, and then presumably they aren't.
This is what my mother has been holding for ten years. Thirty-one processes. Alone. In a house in Hyderabad, in her sleep, since 2015, while I published nine papers on the mechanism and never once asked her a question.
The confrontation happened on the twenty-fourth of November at ten past eight in the evening, on the sixtieth floor, and Ananya asked for it herself.
She sent three words to a private address that Sharath had given her in September and that she had never used. I need an hour.
The reply came in ninety seconds. Sixty. Come up when you are ready. There is nobody else in the building above forty-three.
The sixtieth floor was one room. She had never been up. It ran the whole width of the tower on the western face, glass on three sides, no desk. A low table, ten chairs, a wall of books that were clearly read, and a whiteboard that was covered.
Gachibowli lay below them in the dark, seventeen kilometres of it, and the traffic on the Outer Ring Road was a slow orange artery, stopping and starting, snarling, going nowhere, gloriously unoptimised.
"Sit," Sharath said. "Or don't. What have you got?"
Ananya did not sit.
"I know what Project P is," she said. "I know there were seven hundred and forty-two subjects and three hundred and forty-seven in Phase IV and forty-one survivors. I've watched Subject 031's fourteenth session. I know the containment emitters in that room are Mark Twos with the shielding cans off and the field geometry inverted, because I signed a requisition for three Mark Threes in March and complained about the lead time.
"I know you opened a file with my name on it on the fourteenth of November 2024 at three forty-two in the morning, eight months before I applied. I know you chaired the fellowship that paid for my final year. I know you were the external examiner on my viva and I know what you wrote in the summary remarks because I've had it written in the front of my lab book for three years.
"I know you asked me my name in the Sanctum in March and that you'd known it since 2022, and that you asked it because a woman who has just been asked her name by a great man will walk through any door he holds open for the rest of her life.
"I know Aisha Kapoor's father has a liver.
"And I know what happened at six nineteen on the ninth. It was not an attack and nobody has proved anything about P and NP. Something verified a fragment, and it took nine minutes, and while it was running every lock on Earth was open."
She stopped.
Sharath Jai Shetty stood at the window with his hands in his pockets and did not deny one word of it.
"Sit down, Doctor," he said. "Please. This is going to take longer than an hour and I would rather you were not standing."
She sat down.
"You've missed two things," he said. "One is small and one is not. The small one: there were seven hundred and forty-two attempts, not subjects. Some subjects were used more than once. The number of human beings is five hundred and eleven." He said it without inflection. "I would rather you had the right number. You will want it later and I would prefer you not be corrected on it by somebody hostile."
"And the large one?"
"The large one is that you have brought me an indictment," Sharath said, "and I am not going to contest it, and you did not come up sixty floors at eight in the evening to deliver an indictment to a man who will not contest it. So." He sat down opposite her. "What did you come for?"
And Ananya, who had rehearsed ten versions of this on the stairs, said the thing that was true.
"I came to tell you it can't work."
Something happened in his face then: and this is the thing she was completely unprepared for, though she had written rule six in a file in September and should have known.
He relaxed.
The whole architecture of him came down about four percent, the shoulders, the jaw, and he sat back in the chair and looked at her the way a man looks at a colleague who has finally arrived, and he said: "Oh, thank God."
"Sir—"
"Nine years." He put a hand over his eyes for a moment. "Nine years, Dr. Nayagiri, and I have had four hundred people in this building and ten consultants and a machine that is smarter than all of us and not one of them has been able to follow the argument to the place where it fails. Do you know what that's like? To be unable to find anyone who can tell you that you are wrong?" He dropped the hand. "Go on. Say it properly. Don't be kind about it."
So she said it properly.
"There is no boundary," Ananya said. "You want to hold the proof at ninety-nine point nine nine percent. There is no such percentage, because the thing you are holding is not the kind of thing that has one.
"You've been modelling the barrier as intractable. Expensive. A lock with a very long key, and that model has a percentage in it, because expense is a quantity: you can be halfway through a search, you can have pruned ninety-nine percent of a space, you can hold a solver at a checkpoint and walk away and come back. Everything you have built assumes that.
"It isn't intractable. It's undecidable." She was leaning forward. "I've mapped four hundred and six of the fragments and every reduction in the middle layer turns an expensive problem into a non-terminating one, and my grandmother did that four hundred and six times over forty-one years and she was not making an error, because she knew the distinction perfectly well everywhere else in the same book. There is no arithmetic of how much of an undecidable question you have answered. It isn't a search that could in principle finish. There is no state in which the thing is nearly determined and no operation that gets you closer to determining it.
"You are trying to stand in a gap that has no width, sir. And you have built five hundred and eleven deaths, a hospital wing, a company and twenty-three years on top of an arithmetic that does not exist."
Sharath Jai Shetty was completely still for about nine seconds.
"Yes," he said. "That is the objection. That is exactly the objection, and it is the only one that matters, and you are the first person to state it in this room."
"Then—"
"And it's wrong," he said. "Not stupid-wrong. It's wrong for one reason and it took me four years to find it, and I want you to attack it, because if you can knock it down then I have five hundred and eleven people on my hands for nothing and I would rather know tonight than in twenty years."
He got up and went to the whiteboard and wiped a quarter of it clean with his sleeve, which she found, absurdly, more affecting than anything he said.
"Undecidability is a statement about unbounded computation," he said. "That's the whole content of it. Turing's proof requires a machine with an infinite tape and no clock. The halting problem is undecidable for arbitrary programs running for arbitrary durations on arbitrary memory. Yes?"
"Yes."
"Now bound it." He drew a box. "Take the same question and ask it of a machine with ten to the eighty bits of memory that must answer within ten to the hundred and twenty Planck times. What is the complexity of the halting problem in that box?"
Ananya opened her mouth and stopped.
"It's decidable," she said.
"It is decidable. Trivially, catastrophically decidable. You simulate for the maximum number of steps and if it hasn't halted, it never will, and you have your answer." He drew a second box beside the first. "Bounded halting is not undecidable. It's expensive. It's in the exponential-time hierarchy somewhere and the exponent is obscene and no physical process will ever perform it, but it is a quantity, Doctor. It has a size. It has a percentage."
He put the pen down.
"And this universe is bounded. It has a finite information capacity. You can put a number on it, it's about ten to the hundred and twenty-two bits inside the horizon, and Bekenstein put it there and nobody has moved it. There is no infinite tape. There has never been an infinite tape. Undecidability is a mathematical fiction that requires resources this universe does not contain.
"So: the barrier is not undecidable. It cannot be. Nothing physically instantiated can be undecidable, because undecidability is a property of unbounded objects and there are none. What the barrier actually is, is a bounded problem whose cost exceeds the universe's total capacity — which looks exactly like undecidability from inside, and behaves exactly like it, and is not it. And a cost, however obscene, is a number, and a number can be approached, and a percentage of it can be held."
He sat back down.
"Your grandmother's reductions turn expensive into non-terminating. I agree; I have twenty of them and they do. But I say she was doing an engineering thing, not a mathematical one. She was taking a problem whose cost was merely astronomical and reducing it to a problem whose cost exceeds the horizon, because a cost that exceeds the horizon is as good as infinity for every practical purpose and is much easier to hold. She wasn't crossing a category boundary, Doctor. She was moving something from very expensive to unaffordable, which is the oldest security engineering there is."
The room was silent. Below them the Outer Ring Road stopped and started.
And Ananya Nayagiri sat in a chair on the sixtieth floor and thought about it properly, for three full minutes, while the CEO of Quantace Industries let her, and this is what she found:
It was good.
Not correct. Good. The Bekenstein bound is real and the argument about bounded halting is a real argument that real people have made in real journals. And she could not knock it down in four minutes, and she knew she could not, and she also knew, with the flat certainty of a person who has held the actual object in her hand at two hundred times magnification, that it was wrong.
She went at the hinge.
"Your bound is about storage," she said slowly. "Ten to the hundred and twenty-two bits inside the horizon. That's a bound on what the universe can hold as a value."
"Yes."
"Then it doesn't bind." Ananya reached up and took the pendant off, which she had not done since the materials lab, and put it on the low table between them. "Sir. The Sri Yantra is over-determined. There is no exact construction, you can have the concurrences or the proportions and never both, and eight centuries of geometers have compromised somewhere convenient. My grandmother had one cut in 2007 on a focused ion beam to four hundred nanometres, and she distributed the error across all nine triangles in a fixed ratio, and I spent four hours trying to correct it computationally and it does not converge. Not slowly. The residual approaches a value that is not zero.
"That is a physical object. Forty microns thick. It has been at thirty-seven degrees on a chain around my neck since I was eleven years old, and it has been warm since the third of March.
"It doesn't store the problem, sir, that's the point. It doesn't have to. Your bound says the universe cannot hold ten to the two hundred bits of answer. It says nothing at all about whether the universe can hold a process that never produces one. A non-terminating computation has no output. It has a state, and the state is small, and it is resident, and it costs a trickle forever and never once needs the number that would break your bound." She was talking fast now. "My mother has been running thirty-one of them in a brain. In eighty watts. Not storing thirty-one answers — she couldn't hold one of them, no substrate in this universe could, holding thirty-one questions open, which costs her about four hours of lucidity a day and ten years of her life and nothing else at all.
"Your argument proves that no answer can be stored. Everybody agrees. It proves nothing whatever about the asking, and the asking is the only thing that has ever been in play, and there is no percentage of an asking."
Sharath Jai Shetty looked at the pendant on the table for a long time.
"May I?" he said.
"No."
He accepted that instantly, which frightened her more than if he had argued.
"That's a real objection," he said quietly. "I need to think about that. I need to — " and then he stopped, and something went across his face, and he did the thing she had watched him not do in a lane in Old Hyderabad. He looked away from it.
And Ananya, watching him do it, understood the entire shape of the man in one second.
He's not going to think about it.
Because his hands had gone still, and his eyes had gone to the window, and the graphacer behind his right ear had dropped out of communion to its idle glow without him instructing it to. That she had never once seen happen, and there was a nosebleed starting that he had not noticed. She recognised all of it, because she had seen a version of it in a mirror in June, on the night she deleted a question mark from a private file.
He could not afford for it to be true. That was all. If undecidability was real and un-bounded and not merely expensive, then there was no boundary and no bridge, and Priya was not in a state of quantum persistence waiting to be reached. Priya was a fifteen-year-old girl who had died on a shared bed in Ward 4 of Osmania General Hospital in 2002 while her brother was downstairs at a counter arguing about a deposit. Five hundred and eleven people had died for nothing, and there was no version of Sharath Jai Shetty that could survive holding that sentence in his mouth.
So the arithmetic had to be wrong. So it was wrong. So he had built eleven years and a company and a room on B7 on top of it, and he was better at mathematics than she was, and he had been staring at the flaw for four years, and he was going to look at the window instead.
"Sir," Ananya said. "Please."
"You should have children," Sharath said, to the window.
"What?"
"Or students. Something. You are going to need someone to hand this to." He wiped his nose with the back of his hand and looked at the blood and appeared mildly surprised. "Never mind. Ignore that. Doctor, I'm going to make you an offer and I want you to understand before I make it that it is not a trick and that every word of it is true, and that I know you know that, which is what makes it unfair."
He turned round.
"I can get your brother back."
Ananya did not move.
"He is not dead," Sharath said. "You know that already — your mother told you and you have believed her since the first week, and she is right, and the reason she is right is that a fracture does not destroy, it transports, and the transport is symmetric. He went in on the ninth of June at eleven minutes past two in the morning on Pathergatti Road, and I put him there, and I have not slept properly since, and I could have told you that in June and did not because I needed you working.
"Phase V opens the boundary at a controlled aperture with a vessel holding it. That is what it is for. If the aperture is open and a hand is holding it, then anything on the other side that retains coherent structure can be brought back through, and your brother went through nineteen weeks ago, and — " for the first time his voice moved — "and Doctor, I do not know what nineteen weeks in there does to a person, and I will not pretend to, and I am telling you that he is retrievable and not that he is intact, and I am telling you that because you would not forgive me for the other thing.
"You hold the aperture. I find Priya. He comes out. That is the offer, it is the whole offer, there is nothing under it, and it will work."
Ananya sat in a chair on the sixtieth floor.
And here is the thing that has to be said, because it is the reason this chapter exists and it is the hinge of the entire book: the offer was real.
He was not lying. She had eleven weeks of his journals and four months of his data and she had just spent an hour establishing that the man was better at this than she was, and the mechanism was sound. Phase V would open. A vessel could hold it. Vikram was on the other side of something and the transport was symmetric, and if there was a hand on the aperture then a thing with coherent structure could come back.
She could have her brother. Tonight, if she said yes. Not a hope, not a maybe, she believed it, and she was right to believe it, and that is the cruelty of it.
And it would end the world. Because a held aperture is a near-completion, and near-completions are what the whole of layer two exists to prevent, and Whitefield had been four thousand people on benches with nothing that needed doing, and that had been a fragment, and it had lasted four days, and it had lifted.
She thought about her mother on the sofa on the ninety-first day saying it was not a sacrifice, do not put that word on it, it was a ranking, and it was obvious, and I did it in four seconds.
Four seconds. Her mother had done hers in four seconds, in a chair in a corridor, at forty-four years old.
Ananya Nayagiri sat in a chair on the sixtieth floor of PJS Tower and took five.
"No," she said.
Sharath closed his eyes.
"Thank you," he said, and she has never, in the years since, been able to decide what he meant by it, and has considered the question at length, and has concluded that he did not know either.
"That doesn't stop you," she said.
"No. Phase V commences at four in the morning on the fourteenth. Fifty-two days." He said it as a courtesy, which is what it was. "You will be there, Doctor. Not because I will make you, I have thought about that a great deal and I am not going to, it does not work and I am tired of things that do not work. You will be there because there is one aperture and your brother is on the other side of it, and because you are the only person alive who can hold it, and because in fifty-two days you will have discovered whatever it is you are going to discover in your grandmother's chest, and you will come here with it and try to take it from me.
"I would like that, actually. I would very much like to be beaten by somebody who can follow the argument."
He picked up her pendant, without asking, and handed it to her, and she took it.
"Go home," said Sharath Jai Shetty. "It's late. Say something kind to your father."
Meera Rao was on the stairwell landing between fifty-twelve and fifty-eight, sitting on the step, and she had clearly been there for some time.
"Meera?"
"Don't say anything." Meera's hands were shaking badly enough that she had put them under her thighs to hold them still. "Just. Sit down and let me do this, because I have been trying to do it for four days and I keep getting to the lift and going back."
Ananya sat down on the step.
"I was in the room in 2019," Meera said. "Not the chair. Not: God. Not that. I was on the analysis side, I never went below B6 in my life, I saw traces, I saw coherence traces off a subject and I was told they were from a primate protocol and I knew they weren't, Ananya, I knew in about the second week because the artefacts were wrong, primates don't produce that spectral profile, and I sat with that for ten weeks and then I went to Dr. Iyer and Iyer said take it to the Chairman and I did.
"And he listened to me for forty minutes. And then he asked whether I had eaten."
"Meera."
"And then I got a promotion, and a housing loan at four percent from a Quantace subsidiary, and my daughter got a place at Oakridge, which is ten lakhs a year, which I do not pay, and I have not looked at a raw trace since 2019 because I made a rule and the rule is I only look at aggregates, and that rule is six years old and it is the entire architecture of my life." She was crying without any sound at all. "I signed your vault access in September. Do you know that? You asked me for a repository permission in a list of twelve things and I signed it without reading it, because I have trained myself for six years not to read things, and I have known for two months that I did that on purpose."
Ananya put a hand on her back.
"So." Meera took a breath that went nowhere and took another. "B7. There's a service riser on the east side, behind the fire panel on B6. It's not on the drawings, it's a chilled-water riser from the 2019 fit-out and it has an inspection ladder because the code requires one and nobody has ever taken it out. The hatch at the bottom is a mechanical latch. No badge. No log." She pulled a folded sheet out of her sleeve and put it on the step between them. "That's the riser number and the panel key and the shift pattern for the B6 plant room. It's four days of work and I did it on paper and I have not made a copy."
"Meera, if they find this—"
"I know exactly what happens if they find it. I have spent six years being extremely well paid to know exactly what happens." Meera Rao wiped her face with the heel of her hand and got up, and looked down at Ananya on the step, and her voice went absolutely flat and level. "Her name is Anvitha. She's seven. She wants to be a vet, which is ridiculous, she's frightened of the neighbour's dog." A pause. "That's all. I just, somebody else should know her name. That's all I wanted. You don't have to say anything."
She went down the stairs.
Phase V commenced at 04:00 on the fourteenth of November and the paperwork was signed on the twenty-fourth at 23:41, nineteen minutes after Ananya left the sixtieth floor.
It was one line, in a file with no classification, appended by a terminal that left no fingerprints.
And three and a half thousand kilometres to the north, in the Sindh valley in Kashmir, in a chamber under a shrine that had stood for seven centuries, the fire changed colour.
Ghulam Rasool Khatana was seventy-one years old and he was outside with the sheep at the time, on the slope above the walnut trees, in the first snow of the season. He saw it through the door because the door faced west and the door had been left open since 1990 for reasons that had made sense at the time.
The fire in that chamber had burned continuously since before the Mughals. His father had fed it, and his father's father, and for nineteen years between 1990 and 2009 the Khatanas had fed it alone and told nobody. Because in 1989 an old Pandit had put a hand on his father's shoulder in a field and asked him a favour, and his father had said yes.
It burned orange. It had always burned orange. It burned orange in the way that fire does.
It was burning white.
Not bright — that was the thing he could never explain to the woman when she came, and he tried three times. It was not brighter. It was the same amount of light, exactly the same amount, and it had no colour left in it at all, and it did not flicker.
Ghulam Rasool stood in the snow for about four minutes and looked at it.
Then he brought the sheep in, because they were his and it was cold. Then he went into the house and took down the tin from the shelf above the door, the one that had been there since he was nine years old and had never once been opened in front of a stranger.
In it was a folded paper with two telephone numbers on it in his father's hand. One was struck through.
He carried the tin to the one place on that slope with a signal, which was a rock two hundred metres above the walnut trees. He sat down on it in the snow at half past two at night, and he dialled the number that was not struck through, and it rang.
"Acharya-ji," he said, when it was answered. "It is Ghulam Rasool. Khatana. From the top field."
"Ghulam Rasool. It is late. Is your wife—"
"The fire is white," he said.
